Abstract
Collective cell migration is an essential process in all metazoans. The significance of this process can be seen during many instances in the lifetime of an organism including development, immunity, tissue homeostasis, etc. The mechanism of collective migration is also hijacked in many diseases including cancers. Hence, studying collective migration is important and can help us to come up with treatments against many developmental disorders as well as cancer. During collective cell migration, there is dynamic turnover of proteins within each cell and hence the role that protein degradation machinery plays in collective migration is quite big. The Ubiquitin-Proteasome pathway plays the major role in regulating protein degradation in eukaryotic cells. Over the last 25 - 30 years, many discoveries have come up linking the Ubiquitin-Proteasome pathway to collective cell migration, especially in cancer cells. The study looks at one of the molecules involved in the Ubiquitin-Proteasome pathway, Rpn3 to see how it regulates collective migration of border cells during oogenesis in Drosophila. Rpn3 was shown to regulate the efficient migration of border cells wherein it has a role in effective detachment of the migratory cluster from the anterior epithelium. Later on, disruption of cell polarity by Rpn3 during migration was reported as one of the reasons for delayed migration. Src 42A was shown as a candidate downstream of Rpn3 causing the defective polarity.
