Abstract

A total of 36 species of lichens belonging to 18 genera have been identified from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research - Kolkata (IISER-K), Mohanpur Campus out of which 33 species are crustose and 3 species are foliose. Out of these 36 species, Porina sp. is expected to be a new species. Detailed study will confirm this. This thick growth of lichens could be attributed to the humid climatic conditions prevailing throughout the year and less anthropogenic disturbances. IISER-K Mohanpur campus is located in the Nadia District of West Bengal which has a tropical savanna climate favoring lush growth of flora. The study analyzes the diversity of lichens in Nadia district and in particular IISER-K Mohanpur campus. It aims to study the distribution of various species of lichens on the basis of factors like availability of sunlight, anthropogenic disturbances and pollution. Also, their distributions on different tree substrates were studied. Different trees have different bark types. Some bark may act as a good host as compared to the others. The main motivation behind me choosing this topic is because lichens are one of the common organisms that grow in our campus. Also, they serve as bio-indicators of pollution.
