Abstract

The devising of suitable ancillary ligands for low-valent electropositive main group metals like the divalent zinc, magnesium and calcium has been difficult and challenging because of their requirement of adequate kinetic protection to stabilize the ligand and prevent dissociation and exchange of ligands. The distinct metal complexes of these ligands are potential catalysts for a wide range of varied catalytic reactions, which can prove to be synthetically useful in various fields. In this project, different neutral, monoanionic and pincer ligand platforms, such as the pyridine-based achiral as well as chiral ligands and the fluorenyl anion with a tethered saturated N-heterocyclic carbene ligand have been synthesised, whose organometallic coordination chemistries in association with the different metals have the potential to open up new avenues in the field of main group metal chemistry. The chiral amino-based pyridine ligand backbone bearing varying aromatic side-arm, besides being effective, is also structurally flexible and the smetal complexes of such ligands can be utilised in a wide range of catalytic asymmetric transformations. The fluorenyl-functionalized saturated NHC tethered by an ethylene-linker is expected to stabilize the metals, precisely the low-valent main group metals, more efficiently than its unsaturated congeners, owing to its higher σ-donicity and π-acceptance, which makes it a better ligand. These ligand precursors have been synthesized and fully characterized including NMR spectroscopic techniques.
