Abstract

In this project 2 chromophores have been synthesized using naphthalenebisimide (NBI) as the core molecule. One of them is a monomeric form of NBI with dodecyl chains on either end and other is the dimeric form with the NBIs sharing a xylenediamine on one terminal and the free terminal contains the docecyl chain. The dimer is shown to form strongly coupled aggregates in the ground state which as hypothesized is not a perfect H aggregate but an improper ones with the rings twisted or obliquely inclined to each other. The monomer on the other hand shows strong excimer formation in the excited state. The dimer interacts the most in aromatic solvents and is shown to form stable gels in such solvents. The aromatic solvent system in which the aggregation is studied has predominantly been ortho-xylene.
