Abstract

Coal mining and associated activities have resulted in alterations to the land use/land cover (LULC) in various parts of the world. In Chhattisgarh, four district have seen drastic changes in the land use pattern due to coal mining activities, and this change in LULC have had a significant impact on regional land surface temperature. This study's main objective was to map the change in LULC and its associated LST variations in four districts of Chhattisgarh state, India. Landsat satellite images were used from 1990 to 2020 at 10-year intervals to make LULC maps with five major classes: built-up, coal mines, vegetation, water body, and others. In the present study, the kappa coefficient has been used to measure the accuracy of LULC maps. The Mono-window algorithm (MWA) was utilized to calculate the Land surface temperature (LST). The results show that the green space and forest cover were reduced from 1990-2020 due to increased urbanization and expansion of coal mining activities. Furthermore, there was an increase in LST in the winter and summer seasons for each district, with the summer season experiencing the most significant increase in temperature. The LST was lower in densely vegetated areas, whereas highest in coal mines. The mining land patch positively correlates with the average and maximum patch temperatures. Analysis shows that the maximum patch temperature increases linearly as the coal mine patch area grows.
