Abstract

In this thesis the Plasmon induced enhancement of the upconversion emissions of Er/Yb-doped NaYF4 nanocrystals is studied. This is achieved by integrating the metal nanoparticles such as gold and silver to the Er/Yb-doped NaYF4 nanocrystals through a simple ligand exchange procedure. Upon attachment of Au nanoparticles, a strong enhancement was observed for both green and red emissions with an increase in the green to red emission ratio. In the case of Ag attachment the green to red emission ratio hardly affected. The reason for the enhancement is attributed to the effect of plasmon resonance on the electric field around the nanoparticles.
