Abstract
A detailed electrocatalytic oxidation of the benzyl alcohol along with some of its para-substituted analogues to the corresponding carbonyl compounds with Biuret-modified tetraamidomacrocyclic iron complex [FeIII-bTAML] is reported here. The catalytic plateau currents are observed to show a linear relationship with the catalyst concentration as well as the square root of the substrate concentration. The ratio of the catalytic current and the FeIV/FeV cathodic peak current is inversely proportional to the square root of scan rate. The significant finding of this study revealed the rapid rate of oxidation for the para-substituted electron rich benzyl alcohols as well as the slower reaction rate for the analogues having electron-withdrawing para-substituents. Study of the linear free energy relationship and the kinetic isotope effect done here also give some significant mechanistic indications.
