Abstract
This project introduces the significance of carbohydrates in various life processes, their classification and brief history of carbohydrate chemistry. This chapter also contains the approaches used in modern day therapeutics. Different glycosylation techniques, existing donors and promoters are discussed focusing on the 1,2-cis glycosylation primarily. It illustrates the total chemical synthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit of the O-specific polysaccharide from Ruminococcus gnavus through rational protecting group manipulation and stereoselective glycosylation. The challenges associated with two consecutive 1,2-cis glycosylation units are discussed.
