Abstract

Calcium based MOF catalyst was synthesized and used for transesterification of ethylene carbonate with methanol to give ethylene glycol and DMC. BET surface area of the material was found to be 27.8 m2 g-1. EC conversion increased with increase in the ratio of methanol/EC, catalyst dose, reaction time and temperature. The optimum reaction conditions of 7.5:1 MeOH ratio, 5 hours reaction time, 8 wt. % catalyst loading and 120 °C temperature gave almost 87% EC conversion. The catalyst displayed catalytic efficiency for 6 consecutive cycles. The prepared calcium-based MOF catalyst is found to be an efficient catalyst for the high conversion of cyclic carbonates to dimethyl carbonate and ethylene glycol in the presence of methanol. The catalyst can also be used with other substrates and alcohols.
