Abstract

Azadirachta indica, commonly known as Neem, is prominent in traditional medicine and agriculture and is often revered as a "village pharmacy" in India. Used for over 5000 years, Neem has been applied in various forms for its potent antimicrobial, antifungal, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and antiparasitic properties. Traditional applications include treatment for skin conditions, gum disease, liver disorders, gastrointestinal issues, and its utility as a natural pesticide2. These extensive ethnomedicinal applications have garnered global interest, reflected in the increasing number of patents, primarily from the USA and Japan. Within this pharmacological spectrum, nimbidiol—a trinorditerpenoid compound first isolated in 19591,2 —has emerged as a key bioactive constituent. Recognized for its antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-fibrotic effects, nimbidiol has been shown to inhibit intestinal glucosidases and mitigate renal fibrosis. The therapeutic potential of nimbidiol validates and extends the traditional claims associated with Neem, making it a compelling target for synthetic studies to ensure sustainable and affordable access to this critical bioactive molecule2.
