Abstract

Quantum correlation functions are important tools for theoretical and experimental investigations of quantum many-body physics and quantum optics. Quantum correlation functions are important for understanding the celebrated Hanbury-Brown and Twiss effect. This was a landmark in advacnement of quantum optics and quantum theory. The metastable Helium Bose-Einstein Condensate laboratory is capable of measuring quantum correlation functions with ultracold metastable Helium atoms. The overarching objective of the lab is to investigate the evolution of quantum correlation functions across phase transitions in many-body systems. A crucial intermediate goal of our lab is to observe the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss effect in clouds of metastable Helium atoms through the study of the second-order quantum correlation function. However, the efforts to reach the goal have faced several challenges. The thesis details the problems as well as the experimental methods and solutions developed to work out the challenges. The thesis also provides sufficiently detailed theoretical foundations required to understand the experimental work. Finally, we describe here how absorption imaging is used to image and characterise the atomic cloud, which is held in our magnetic trap.
