Abstract
The interaction between light and matter represents one of the most fundamental processes in nature, governing phenomena ranging from photosynthesis to vision, from astronomical observations to quantum computing. These interactions occur across vastly different timescales—from attoseconds (10−18 s) for electronic transitions to milliseconds (10−3 s) for slower thermal processes. Understanding these interactions at their intrinsic timescales has been a driving force behind the development of ultrafast spectroscopy techniques. When electromagnetic radiation interacts with matter, numerous processes can occur: reflection, refraction, absorption, scattering, and various nonlinear effects. The timescale of these interactions reveals critical information about the underlying physical mechanisms.
