Abstract

Guwahati has emerged as the second most polluted city in the world, which has become a silent rise for global concern in the city. It investigates the seasonal change of industrial pollutant dispersion by visiting 12 industries across different regions of the city (approaching four distinct regions: Dhirenpara, Noonmati, Amingaon, and Bhangagarh using the Gaussian Plume model along with industrial data and meteorological data from August 2023 till July 2024. Using the model, we plot for four pollutants, SO2, NO2, PM2.5, and PM10 across various seasons based on the evaluation of industrial data and meteorological data collected from the industries and found out that the winter season showed the highest concentration among all the other seasons due to low wind speed, temperature inversion. In contrast, the summer season showed the lowest concentration, aided by high solar radiation, high wind speed, and high atmospheric mixing, resulting in low ground-level concentration. It is seen that the Amingaon region has been affected the most due to its high concentration among all the other regions of the city. This study highlights how different parameters of both industrial as well as meteorological such as atmospheric stability, wind dynamics, solar radiation, and seasonal variation, affect the pollutant dispersion in industrial regions and determine the safe distances for positioning receptors distant from emission sources to lower exposure to pollutants and preserve environmental health.
