Abstract

Stimuli-responsive polymers, which alter their physical or chemical properties in response to stimuli, such as temperature, pH, light, etc., are important, especially thermoresponsive polymers exhibiting upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviour. Polymers exhibiting UCST property in aqueous solutions have enormous applications in the biological field, as water is a safe solvent. Designing such systems requires precise control over polymer composition, which facilitates intermolecular interactions between polymer chains, like H-bonding, that drive the UCST behaviour. Alternating polymers with a precise sequence of monomers promote these intermolecular interactions, leading to UCST properties. The synthesis of these polymers is facilitated by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique, which is a living/controlled polymerization technique that allows the synthesis of polymers with well-defined architectures and controlled molecular weights.
