Abstract

In our work, we propose a methodology to localize the source of the gravitational waves to a certain region in the sky with a specified accuracy. For direct detection of gravitational waves, huge interferometry instruments have been built like Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and others. The signals received by these detectors correspond to our input signals. A template signal is a waveform which is a solution of the Einstein’s equations. In our methodology to propose a detection technique, we consider the elliptically polarized waveform of a binary coalescing neutron star system as our template signal. A match filtering analysis between the input signal and the template signal is done and the parameters corresponding to the binary star system are estimated. If the estimation is successful, the peak in the cross correlation analysis between these two signals gives us an estimate of the time of arrival of the gravitational wave with a timing accuracy. Using the time of arrivals at different detectors across the world, the time delay is calculated which in turn is made use of to localize the source of the gravitational waves using triangulation method.
