Abstract
The contents of this thesis entitled “Photochromic Dimethyldihydropyrene Switches for Optical Control of Conductance and Fluorescence” has been divided into five chapters according to its contents and the subareas of the work under the broad area of photochromism and sensors. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the thesis, discussing different types of sensors and the advantages of fluorescence probes. It also delves into the mechanisms involved in detecting various analytes and provides a historical perspective on photochromism. Chapter 2 focuses on the development of two chemodosimeters for sulfide detection. These probes utilize innovative strategies based on a turn-on fluorescence mechanism. Spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques are employed to validate the detection mechanisms and effectiveness of the probes. Chapter 3 shifts the focus from sensors to photochromism and reports the synthesis of photochromic derivatives of benzodimethyldihydropyrene to improve their photoisomerization process and develop fluorescent switches. Various analytical techniques are used to characterize the derivatives, and their photochromic properties were evaluated and compared. Chapter 4 reports on a silver(I) coordination polymer incorporating a photoswitchable dihydropyrene linker. Spectroscopic techniques are employed to investigate the properties of the linker and the coordination polymer, revealing reversible photoswitching capabilities. The concluding chapter discusses future possibilities for exploration in the field based on the findings of the thesis. This thesis contributed to the development of selective fluorescent probes for sulfide detection and enhances our understanding of photochromism and its applications, providing a foundation for further research in these areas.
