Abstract

This thesis entitled “Synthesis, self-assembly and Applications of Tryptophan Containing Tripeptides” represents the synthesis, characterization, conformational analysis, and applications of tryptophan containing tripeptides in biological or physical domains. Self-assembling peptides can give rise to a variety of supramolecular architectures like supramolecular helix, supramolecular sheets and others, which have potential importance in biological as well as material sciences. Previous studies suggested that peptide matrix can be decorated with metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots, to fabricate advance functional materials. Two peptides have been designed and constructed which can self-assemble to form two dimensional sheet like nanoporous supramolecular architectures. The chapter entitled “Synthesis of Tryptophan containing tripeptides and in situ gold nanoparticles” represents synthesis of tripeptides containing tryptophan and α-aminoisobutyric acid by solution phase methods, their characterization by NMR, FTIR and Mass spectroscopy, their morphological studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. The X-ray crystallography reveals that the peptide 1 adopts a distorted type II′ β-turn structure. There are one N-H...O and one N-H....N intramolecular hydrogen bonds in solid state. Moreover, the peptide 1 forms two dimensional sheets like nanoporous structure in higher order packing. Both the peptides act as in situ reducing agent and synthesized spherical monodisperse gold nanoparticle.
