Abstract

Porous Au NPs were obtained from alloy NPs of Au and Ag by dealloying with dilute HNO₃. Au/Ag alloy NPs were synthesized via reduction of a mixture of HAuCl₄ and AgNO₃ by sodium borohydride in the presence of sodium citrate as a capping agent in aqueous medium. The plasmon absorption band of Ag/Au NPs shifts linearly to the red with increase in Au content. Comparison of the absorption spectrum of the synthesised porous NPs with those of the control NPs concludes that the NPs produced are indeed alloys and not coreshell composites. The porous NPs were used as a host for different molecules. The emission quantum yield of the laser dye fluorescein is found to increase profusely on treatment with porous Au NPs. Moreover, effect on the ground and excited state tautomerization of 2,2´- bipyridine-3,3´-diol molecule [BP(OH)₂] was studied in the confined nanocavities of the porous NPs by steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.
