Abstract

USA’s rapid economic growth has given rise to serious environmental issues in the country. The number of studies to understand the relationship between a country’s economic growth and change in the country’s environment in the process of economic growth has increased significantly in the last decade. To understand the conundrum between economic growth and environment protection, an intensive study into the relationship between the two is the basic need for the formulation of new environmental policies. This report uses econometric analyses of time-series data on several indicators of environmental pollution and per capita income between 1990 and 2011. This study is an attempt to investigate the interplay between environmental quality and per capita income of USA in the light of their very high economic growth in the past. First, there is co-integration between few environment pollution indicator and per capita income. However, for most of the pollution indicators there is no co-integration between them and per capita income. Second, the increase of per capita GDP has evident lag effects on environment quality. Third, Generalized Impulse Response Function shows that the responses of environment pollution indicators to the impulse of per capita income are mostly fluctuant.
