Abstract

Hydrazine is a very useful chemical that finds application in various industries and is commonly used in rocket propellants as a fuel. However, it also poses significant negative effects, as accidental exposure can lead to severe health issues, and it is considered hazardous to the environment. To address the need for its detection, we have developed a norbornene-based colorimetric probe designed Sensor for the selective and sensitive detection of hydrazine. A small molecule containing an azo bond was synthesized, which can react specifically with hydrazine, resulting in a visible colour change, a shift in the UV absorption peak, and a blue shift in wavelength. These properties are utilized for effective hydrazine sensing. The successful synthesis of the small molecule and PNBr was confirmed through characterization using ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, along with mass spectrometry data to support the structural integrity. Furthermore, a PNBr polymer was synthesized, which can be incorporated with the small molecule to form a polymeric system, offering potential for future applications in hydrazine sensing. We have done a selectivity study and time dependent study on UV spectrometer and the results reflects on highly selectivity and rapid screening towards of hydrazine is observed.
