Abstract

Fluorescence studies in RTILs have been done using blue emitting dyes. Almost in all the cases, it has been shown that fluorescence decay of all dyes follow non-exponential decay behaviour. So it was necessary to know, what the nature of fluorescence decay behaviour of neat RTILs are. The present dissertation reports an endeavour to understand the nanoscopic structure of RTILs by using optical spectroscopic tool like steady state time resolved fluorescence. From the RET study it was proved that neutral dye and ionic dye experience different nanoscopic environment in RTILs. However, the experiment with ionic dye was done using a cationic dye. RTILs are composed of cation & anions. Hence, the kind of environment an anionic dye will experience expectedly be different. It has been shown that fluorescence decay dynamics of neat RTILs is non-exponential. Moreover many rotational anisotropic studies of dyes have been done in RTILs. It has been shown that the fluorescence behaviour of red emitting dyes is different from the same for blue emitting dyes. The solvation phenomenon in RTILs is far from completely understood. It would be interestingly to know whether and how the solvation dynamics of red emitting dyes will be different from what is reported.
