Abstract

Chapter 1 covers a general introduction to the lanthanides (Ln3+), their characteristic properties, literature review on lanthanide-doped robust colloidal luminescent nanomaterials: synthesis and application, our objectives. Chapter 2 illustrates the synthesis of water dispersible Eu3+-doped NaGd(SO4)2.H2O nanorods and the use of Eu3+ luminescence for selective Fe3+ sensing application. Chapter 3 deals with highly luminescent alkali earth metal molybdate nanocrystals for selective and sensitive detection of aromatic amino acids via resonance energy transfer (RET) approach. Chapter 4 represents the use of Eu3+ ions as an optical probe to follow the growth of colloidal ZnO nanostructures. Chapter 5 deals with highly UV luminescent water dispersible Eu2+-doped BaSO4 nanoparticles and their use in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of carbon dots. Chapter 6 demonstrates the synthesis of 3,5-Dinitrobenzoic acid-capped upconverting nanocrystals for the selective detection of melamine. Chapter 7 deals with the selective reduction of visible upconversion emissions induced by Bi3+ in Tm3+/Yb3+-doped Y0.89-xBixVO4 microcrystals.
