Abstract
Chapter 1 illustrates the significance of carbohydrates in various life processes, their applications in modern day therapeutics and the emergence of a new area of research called ‘glycomics’. Chapter 2 demonstrates the recent development in glycosylation strategies, the key to the synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. The main focus is given on the activation of glycosyl halides, thioglycosides and glycosyl trichloroacetimidates. Chapter 3 describes the total synthesis of the tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigen from Plesiomonas shigelloides in the form of its p-methoxyphenyl glycoside. Chapter 4 details the chemical synthesis of the tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigen from Edwardsiella tarda in the form of its p-methoxyphenyl glycoside. Chapter 5 illustrates the total synthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigen from Salmonella enterica O44 in the form of its p-methoxyphenyl glycoside. Chapter 6 deals with the design, synthesis and characterization of magnetic glyconanoparticles having Fe3O4 as the magnetic core and galactose, lactose, galabiose and globotriose as carbohydrate ligands.
