Abstract
In this study we have synthesized poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) based hydrogels via both conventional free radical polymerisation (FRP) and controlled radical polymerisation (CRP). Hydrogel synthesis via RAFT using di(ethylene glycol)dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) as di-functional cross-linker has been performed using two different chain transfer agents (CTA), 4-cyano-4-(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl) sulfanylpentanoic acid (CDP) and POSS chain-ended CTA (POSS-CDP) in presence of AIBN (AIBN acts as radical source) for various [monomer]/[cross-linker] ratio. To understand the effect of POSS as well as cross-linking density on morphology and mechanical strength of the hydrogels, various studies have been conducted which includes swelling and deswelling kinetics measurement at different temperatures, thermogravimetric analysis and rheological tests. The interior morphology of hydrogel matrix has been examined by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM).
