Abstract

Aging is associated with the reorganization of brain functional networks related to specific tasks. A prominent decline in brain efficiency has been observed in old people for functions such as short-term memory. Increase in randomness of the brain functional network may be one of the possible causes. To verify this, we try to come up with a quantitative measure of network randomness and use it to analyze functional brain networks related to short-term memory tasks in brains of two age groups. We propose one such definition of a randomness parameter and test it on various wellknown types of networks to demonstrate that it agrees with our intuitive idea of randomness. We then use it on real brain functional networks of two different age groups and try to establish a distinction between them.
