Abstract
The asymmetric Fano resonance originating from the interference of a narrow resonance with a broad spectral line or continuum of states is a universal phenomenon which is observed in diverse quantum and classical systems. It has been under recent investigation because of its numerous potential applications, in sensors, switching, lasing, invisibility cloaking, nonlinear and slow-light devices and so forth. In this thesis we have demonstrated the simple yet elegant approach for probing, tuning the interference effect and the resulting asymmetric line shape in an anisotropic Fano resonant system of waveguided plasmonic crystal by Mueller-Matrix based polarization analysis. This approach is based on generalized model of Fano resonance in scattering, and tunabiility is achieved by controlling the Fano phase shift and the relative amplitudes of the interfering modes by pre and post selection of polarization states of light. The ability to probe, manipulate, and desirably tune the interference effect and the resulting spectral line shape by Mueller matrix-based polarization state control enable the new insights and various promising applications of polarization-optimized anisotropic Fano resonant systems.
