Abstract

The excitation dependent emission of carbon quantum dots (CDs) is really a fascinating property to study. Despite a lot of research on this phenomenon, the true explanation is still a mystery. From UV to NIR, the whole range of emission can be covered using just a single kind of carbon dot only by changing the excitation wavelength. But, due to the lack of research insight in this issue, targeted synthesis and the control of the emission range is still very difficult. This fact is preventing the development of novel technologies based on this intriguing property. In this thesis, two types of CDs have been prepared with excitation dependent emission property and into basic mechanism that is responsible for this property have been probed. These synthesized novel CDs have unique optical properties. From the NMR and the FT-IR spectra, it is observed that the chemical environment and the functional groups present in these two different types CDs are very similar. The AFM analysis shows that blue green fraction has particles of average size 7.83 nm and green yellow fraction has particles of average size 8.04 nm. These CDs has shown better photostability compared to the CdSe core and CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots.
