Abstract

The Himalayan glaciers fluctuated considerably during the late Quaternary implying their sensitivity to changes in the past climatic conditions. The timing of glaciation and deglaciation is an important parameter that helps in the understanding of the past climatic conditions. The Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) is the major source of moisture for the growth of glaciers in the Central Himalaya. The field geomorphology supported by Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating enabled to understand the geomorphic evolution of the Badrinath Valley. The maximum extent of the valley glacier was till Hanuman Chatti (2560 m asl) which showed multiple evidence of glacial and fluvio-glacial deposit around 42, 30 and 15 ka. The retreat of the LGM glaciers from the valley along with the strengthening and weakening of the ISM caused the formation of three sets of fluvial terraces between 23- 16 ka, 10-7 ka and 7-5 ka.
