Abstract

Metalloenzymes1 containing transition metals are ubiquitous in nature. Palladium, one of the most catalytically versatile transition metals is presently undergoing a renaissance due to the recognition that the complexes of palladium being efficient catalysts for a wide range of chemical transformations. We envisioned that the use of the palladium compounds with such redox active aminophenolate class of ligands might allow the carbon-carbon bond formation catalysis via cross-coupling methodology. Furthermore, dioxygen activation, stoichiometric or catalytic chemical transformations by Ni, Pd and Pt compounds with redox-active ligands will be worth studying. As part of investigation, dimeric Ni(II), Pd(II), Cu(II) complexes of phenolate ligands are synthesized and electronic structure of their neutral and oxidized product is studied. In this thesis, significant efforts have been made to search for reasonable, cheap ligands to prepare Pd compounds which can not only emerge as a highly active catalyst, but also demonstrate good thermal stability, effective in functional group tolerance and resistant towards air and moisture.
