Abstract

Although predicted almost a century ago in Einstein's general theory of relativity, the first evidence found for the existence of gravitational waves was obtained indirectly in the mid 1970s. It was observed that the time period of a binary system consisting of a pulsar and a neutron star decayed with time and calculations showed consistency with gravitational radiation damping. Low signal to noise ratio limited a direct detection of the waves. Matched Filtering is one such method which can extract a signal from the detector output contaminated by noise.This enables data analysis techniques to extract the signal buried in noise. Development of technologies have made it possible for direct detection of gravitational waves. Several interferometers are operational worldwide like the LIGO and VIRGO, which has now achieved desired sensitivities. So the quest for direct observation of the first gravitational wave is around the corner.
