Abstract
The emphasis of this thesis is to determine and investigate the distribution of selected trace elements in the Brahmani River System (BRS) located in the eastern India and understand the sources as well as the processes contributing to these metals in river water. Towards this goal, river waters from both the mainstream and tributaries and also, mine/industry waters have been sampled from the Brahmani basin in course of two field trips spread over post monsoon and winter season. An assessment has been made to address the role of lithology (silicates/carbonates) and anthropogenic activity in supplying the studied trace elements to the Brahmani river system. The major ion chemistry is indicative of dominance of carbonate weathering. For certain trace elements such as Co, Ni, Sr, & Pb, anthropogenic contributions seem significant as evident from higher concentrations in industrial and mine effluent waters.
