Abstract
Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique has been employed for the synthesis of double hydrophobic block copolymers poly(stearic acid methacryloyloxyethyl ester)-block-poly(Boc-phenylalanine methacryloyloxyethyl ester) (PSAMA-b-P(Boc-Phe-HEMA)) with fixed PSAMA block length and variable block length of P(Boc-Phe-HEMA). The PSAMA and P(Boc-Phe-HEMA) blocks have different solubility in different organic solvents due to difference of polarity of two block. Self assembled aggregates of PSAMA-b-P(Boc-Phe-HEMA) polymers with micellar type morphology in hexanes with PSAMA core and P(Boc-Phe-HEMA) coronas have been obtained. But reverse micellization occurs when self-assembled aggregation has been studied in DMF, DMSO and acetonitrile. Double hydrophobic PSAMA-b-P(Boc-Phe-HEMA) block copolymer can undergo transformation to amphiphilic block copolymers upon simple Boc deprtoection. These deprotected amphiphilic block copolymers showed interesting aggregation properties in methanol and water. Interestingly, morphological transformation occur in methanol from spherical micelle to square to rod like form with the increase of the block length of P(Boc-Phe-HEMA).
