Abstract

The thesis deals with the study of the crustal structure of the Sikkim Himalaya using broadband seismological data acquired from a focussed network of seven stations span- ning the arcuate MCT "culmination" zone across the Lesser and Higher Himalaya. This is followed by the study of source properties of the 18th September 2011 (Mw 6.9) Sikkim earthquake, its aftershocks and the 2006 Phodong earthquake. Results from this research unravels (a) the 3-dimensional shear-wave velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Sikkim Himalaya; (b) the geometry of the major sub-surface disconti- nuities (eg. MHT and Moho) and their relationship to the geologic structures observed on the surface; (c) the deformation of the underthrusting Indian crust beneath Sikkim Himalaya and its relationship to the deformation of the overlying Himalayan wedge; and (d) the link between the crustal structure and earthquakes, in the framework of active tectonics of the eastern Himalayan plate boundary system.
