Abstract

This work is an effort to understand the nature of shallow marine bivalve diversity and distribution along Indian coast and to evaluate the contribution of global and regional processes contributing to develop this pattern in this tropical region. This was achieved through a thorough evaluations of Indian marine bivalves (Recent) by (i) diversity analysis at occurrence and abundance level, (ii) evaluating distribution pattern of species composition and ecological guilds, and (iii) assessing environmental correlates of diversity and distribution. This work is first of its kind to document the regional diversity of shallow marine bivalves along Indian coast. It demonstrates that the species richness of Recent marine bivalves within tropics does not always follow global-patterns like LBG; it is primarily governed by regional conditions such as productivity and salinity. My study showed, for the first time, the effect of oceanic circulation in creating distinct eco-regions along the west coast of India. It also demonstrated the high-diversity regions in the east coast, that may have developed due to its proximity and biotic exchange with biodiversity hotspots like Indo- Malayan Archipelago.
