Abstract

Nowadays most of the commercially available polymers are synthesized from nonrenewable petrochemical feedstock. The depletion of reservoir of fossil fuels and petroleum resources on continuous consumption encouraged scientists to design biocompatible as well as biodegradable products from renewable feedstock. Thus, the replacement of petroleum-based raw materials by renewable resources has become a major interest both in the academic and industrial communities because of environmental and economic issues. Several strategies have been designed in the literature to incorporate fatty acids into the polymeric architecture, either in the main chain or in the side chain of the polymer. Various polymerization methods, including condensation, metathesis, cationic and radical procedures have been widely applied so far to incorporate fatty acid moieties into the polymer main chain to prepare a class of polymers such as polyester, polyanhydride, polyurethane, polycarbonate, etc. Very few report are avalable on controlled radical polymerization techniques such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) to produce side-chain fatty acid based polymers with controlled molecular weights, narrow molar mass distributions and defined chain end functionalities. Herein we will discuss various strategies in detail to prepare fatty acid containing polymeric materials via controlled polymerization techniques and study their self-assembly behaviour (both in aqueous/organic medium), and finally their potential applications in various fields.
