Abstract
This thesis deals with the new chalcogenophene based π-conjugated materials and their applications in field effect transistors and as electrochromic materials. The novel copolymers comprising 4,4‒difluoro‒4‒bora‒3a,4a‒diaza‒s‒indacene (BODIPY) as acceptor and CPT‒ based terthiophene as donor have been synthesized. Polymers were applied as active OFET materials and the band gaps were tuned with simple connectivity modification. Due to the more effective conjugation through ῾α᾿ positions of BODIPY, low optical band gaps were obtained for polymers P2.1 and P2.4. On the other hand, the acetylene linker in the polymer backbone enhanced the conjugation by minimizing the possible steric hindrance. The next part of the thesis, deals with the synthesis of multiple selenium and sulfur containing fused bicyclic heterocycles viz. diselenolodiselenole (C₄Se₄) and thienopentathiepine (C₄S₆) derivatives for the first time. The tuning of their structural and optoelectronic properties were achieved by judicious choice of end-group substitution. The crystal structure, OFET properties and electrochemical polymerization ability showed the suitability for the incorporation of multiple heteroatom. In the later part of the thesis, further explored the radical anion polymers and their ambient stability on NDI‒vinylene copolymers, which indicates that the low LUMO levels of the polymers can increase the radical stability for longer time.
