Abstract

Chapter 1 introduces the readers with the genesis and the importance of carbohydrates in various life processes. It illustrates the implication of carbohydrates in the development of novel therapeutics. It also justifies the introduction of a new domain of study called "Glycomics" that deals with the chemistry and biology of carbohydrates in detail. Chapter 2 illustrates the importance of the reducing end glycoside in a synthetic oligosaccharide in the light of its further application as conjugates. The chapter reviews the literature reports on commonly used glycosides and discuss their utility aspects in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. As the objective of the present thesis is to develop synthetic strategies for biologically active oligosaccharides, the review on different anomeric glycosides is justified. Chapter 3 demonstrates the synthetic strategy developed for the chemical synthesis of the tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the O-polysaccharide isolated from A. brasilense SR80. Chapter 4 details the newly established synthetic protocol for the synthesis of the hexasaccharide repeating unit of the capsular polysaccharide isolated from carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumonia 2796 and 3264. Chapter 5 illustrates the chemical synthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit of the EPS isolated from L. plantarum C88 in the form of its 2-aminoethyl glycoside. Chapter 6 deals with the synthesis of the tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the capsular polysaccharide isolated from Azospirillum brasilense Jm125A2 through rational protecting group manipulations and stereo-selective glycosylations.
