Abstract

Chapter 1 gives the general introduction to carbohydrates and illustrates their role in various biological processes. The chapter also highlights the application of carbohydrate molecules in modern day therapeutics and introduces the readers with the new domain of research called "Glycomics." Chapter 2 reviews the literature reports on various amino protecting groups utilized in the chemical synthesis of amino sugars. As the present thesis deals with the synthesis of oligosaccharides containing one or more amino sugars, the review is well justified prior to the synthetic endeavour. Chapter 3 demonstrates the synthetic strategy developed for the Synthesis of the pentasaccharide analogue related to the repeating unit of the O-antigen from E. coli O158. Chapter 4 details the established synthetic protocol for the chemical synthesis of the hexasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigen from Shigella flexneri serotype 1d (I: 7,8). Chapter 5 illustrates the chemical synthesis of the tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigen from E. coli O174:H28 through rational protecting group manipulations and stereo-selective glycosylations.
