Abstract

Variability of the Sun is well established. Herein we have tried to quantify the extent to which it can affect the Earth's climate. Reliable sunspot data are available for a period of over about 4 centuries. After identifying solar parameters, such as total solar irradiance and solar modulated cosmic ray flux, that may influence the Earth's climate, using sunspot data it is possible to reconstruct for such parameters for the last four centuries. Our aim is to seek a relationship between variations in said parameters and Earth's average surface temperature. The analysis described here establishes such a relationship, within the premise of certain empirical formulations. The main conclusion is that anthropogenic causes contribute more than they did two centuries back.
