Abstract

The main focus of this thesis has been studying, both theoretically and experimentally with simple non-destructive spectroscopic techniques such as Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence measurements, various sub-resonant processes in semiconductors. While some of these processes studied here are of importance for optical cooling of solids, some play a crucial role in determining the fundamental limit of disorder in even the most pure semiconductor systems at zero temperature. The topics presented here may not be entirely new, and there have actually been many theoretical and experimental investigations concentrating on specific details. But finding new insights on these well-studied topics by employing simple and general approaches is challenging and satisfying. We have tried to achieve that in this work. Four problems are studied in this thesis. While three of them worked satisfactorily, the conclusions of the fourth problem are quite surprising and unexpected, and thus needs further revision with more detailed analysis.
