Abstract

This dissertation explores self-assembly in three different model systems, namely, polyoxometalates, soft-oxometalate and supramolecular polymers. Self-assembly of metal oxide building blocks leading to the formation of giant polyoxometalate clusters in solution is investigated. Polyoxometalates undergo spontaneous self-assembly in solution forming ‘Soft-oxometalates’. Soft-oxometalates have unique properties, such as can catalyze efficiently energy reactions like CO₂ reduction coupled with water oxidation, is shown. Assembly of a large number of cluster molecules together provides effective catalysis towards such an important reaction for green energy production. Self-assembly of polymers leads to the formation of hydrogels; used for enhancing strength of a system like concrete. Assembly of polyelectrolytes is shown to form supramolecular polyelectrolyte complexes which are self-healing, can load and deliver doxorubicin for effective anti-cancer activity.
