Abstract
This thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of an anthracene based fluorescent mercury ion sensor. Subsequently, we have studied the effect of Hg²⁺ ions on the photodimerization of the anthracene units present in our sensor molecule. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction of the research on these fields based on the previous literature. Chapter 2 deals with the results obtained from various spectroscopic measurements. Here, we see that the anthracene based sensor shows significant enhancement of fluorescence emission intensity selectively for Hg²⁺ ions. Also, UV studies showed that Hg2+ ions increased the rate of photodimerization of the anthracene units of our sensor molecule. Chapter 3 comprises of the synthetic procedures and various characterization data of the sensor molecule.
