Abstract
10-undecynoic acid capped Yb³⁺/Er³⁺–doped NaYF4- nanocrystals were prepared via hydrothermal method. These nanocrystals exhibit strong green and red emission via the upconversion process when excited with a 980 NIR radiation. When mixed with gold nanoparticles, enhancement in the green and red emission intensity of the upconversion emission was observed due to strong coupling of the surface plasmon resonance of the gold nanoparticles with that of the electronic transitions of the Yb³⁺/Er³⁺–doped NaYF₄₋ nanocrystals. We believe further increase in the intensity of the Yb³⁺/Er³⁺–doped NaYF₄₋ nanocrystals is possible by covalently attaching them with the Au nanoparticles. This can be achieved via click chemistry route due to the presence of triple bond and free thiol groups at the surface of UDA capped Er³⁺/Yb³⁺-doped NaYF₄₋ nanocrystals and Au nanoparticles, respectively.
