Abstract

Formazanate ligands are derived from formazans. BF₂ formazanate complexes have previously been shown to act as electron acceptors and their spectroscopic properties have been tuned through variation of the degree of π-conjugation and the donor/acceptor properties of their nitrogen and carbon-bound substituents. The main aim of present work is to synthesize BF₂ formazanate heterocycles with thiophene capping, study their electropolymerization, photophysical and spectroelectrochemical properties. One of the major components of the present work is to synthesize formazan-based stable radicals. The growing and interesting fields of conjugated polymer and electronics have drawn interest for many researchers and academicians to manifest organic electronics. The combination of both the research goals has lead to promising outcomes. The inorganic or conventional transitors with extrinsic doping ability have been noted in both research works and textbooks. But to introduce students with the multidisciplinary goal of electronics via the organic counterpart is a challenge which leads them to the knowledge of the structure and property of the organic conjugated polymers and their roles in electronics. Here the well documented and a very important conjugated polymer with one of the basic colors, PEDOT (blue) has been described in terms of its synthesis form 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene by Galvanostatic polymerization alongside, the electrochromic nature of the polymer. The instrumentation for the optical and electrochemical experiments have been simplified to the student level to provide them both the understanding and visual demonstration of the color switching phenomena in conjugted polymers. This demonstration of elctrochromicity in conducting polymers has never been tried for the graduate or higher division undergraduate students in the universities, till today.
