Abstract

This research work involves the synthesis of an oxopropanenitrile and the Knoevenagel condensation of Curcumin with aldehydes and ketones. Development of an efficient catalytic system is a major goal for renewable energy research. We describe the synthetic route for the synthesis of an oxopropanenitrile which can be further used in the formation of an aromatic pincer non-innocent ligand. The initial reaction of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid at 120⁰C with ethanol yields diethyl pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate tht, on further reaction with acetonitrile at 65⁰C forms pyridine-2,6-bis(3-oxo-3-propanenitrile). The Knoevenagel condensation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with ketones has always remained of the most challenging synthetic processes. We describe the synthetic route for the formation of curcumin which has been further used in the condensation with benzophenone and benzaldehyde. The initial reaction of acetylactone with vanillin at 80⁰C yields curcumin, a diaryl heptanoid containing two α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups that on further reaction with benzaldehyde yields a benzylidene derivative.
