Abstract
A novel leucine-based alternating zwitterionic polyampholyte was synthesized through sequence-controlled copolymerization of rationally designed monomers. The protected amino acid, tert-butyl L-leucine based Nitrogen substituted maleimide monomer (M1) was copolymerized with a styrene-based tert-butyl carbamate (Boc)-protected leucine monomer (M2) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique. The alternate placement of both the monomers throughout the polymer chain was confirmed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The formation of all the subsequent intermediates of monomer synthesis was also characterized using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The as-synthesized copolymer could serve as a cationic and anionic unit of the co-zwitterion monomer on deprotection. The protected version of the as-synthesized copolymers displayed intense blue luminescence in organic solvents. The deprotected polymer also showed fluorescence activity in the water-soluble state. Finally, the deprotected polymer was employed for selective CS2 detection in 100% water under basic condition.
