Abstract

In this work, we have modelled fractures numerically using the equivalent medium method where fractures are considered as linear slip interfaces. We use this model to study the seismic wave attenuation associated with fracture clustering. We have considered wave propagation in a medium where fractures are oriented perpendicular to the wave propagation direction. The the magnitude of clustering is quantified using two parameters namely, Coefficient of Variation(Cv) and Lacunarity. The results show that the seismic wave attenuation follows a linear relationship with normalized Lacunarity and Cv. The former being an unbiased estimator of clustering as determined with the help of a Cantor bar, it is more relevant for the studies associated with varying distances between the source and receiver. We have carried out experiments for measuring the difference in attenuation for different incident angles. The results from the studies show that the wave attenuation follows an inverse relationship with the incident angle.
