Abstract

The study areas (Bardhaman and Nadia district) come under the eight districts of West Bengal where the ground water is contaminated with toxic heavy metals and use of such contaminated groundwater for irrigation purposes have affected the agricultural lands and crops severely. Prolonged accumulation of these toxic heavy metals in crops grown in these agricultural fields has become a major source of metal poisoning. In this dissertation the concentration of heavy metals like Zn, Fe, Ni, Cd and Cu in the collected samples vegetable (cabbage), fruit (banana) and rice (miniket) grown in these area were measure. The mean concentration of Cd is the range of (2.43-2.73 mg/kg) and Ni (12.86- 15.2 mg/kg) were found much higher than the maximum allowable limit recommended by both WHO 2001 and Indian standards whereas for Fe (44.3-144.7 mg/kg) the metal concentration is higher than the Indian standards but within the safe value of WHO 2001 permissible limit. The mean concentration of Cu (1.4-18.73 mg/kg) and Zn (14.42-44.3 mg/kg) has been found within the safe limit of both the WHO 2007 and Indian standards.
