Abstract
The study of electromagnetic interaction with free electrons of metals comprise the field of plasmonics. Fano resonance is one among many fascinating phenomena observed in plasmonic systems. Fano resonance is an interference effect which originates from the coupling of a narrow discrete state with a broad continuum mode. It is unique with its asymmetric line shape characterized by q parameter. Fano resonance in plasmonic systems have found tremendous applications in sensors, switching, lasing, cloaking, filters, robest color display, non-linear and slow light devices ans so forth. With this thesis we are presenting a new approach for tuning the Fano interference effect and the resulting asymmetric line shape in a wave-guided plasmonic crystal, by polarized light. Using Mueller matrix formalism, it is shown that spin based optical structure can be used for desirably tune Fano spectral profile. Along this work, we are also presenting the possibility of applying the idea of Fano resonance in wave-guided plasmonic crystal for sensing and quantifying Arsenic by Mueller matrix based polarization studies. Arsenic, being a potentially harmful element contaminates water resources in many ways has to be examined seriously and carefully eliminated. We show that anisotropic plasmonic crystals showing Fano resonance can be used for precise detection and quantification of Arsenic in water, using polarized light.
