Abstract
This thesis consists of the synthesis of bis(1-methylbenzimidazolium) diiodide and dihexafluorophosphate ligands and a silver (I) complex was synthesized using the latter one. The complex is characterized using common spectroscopic techniques (NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy). In addition to that, attempts were given for the complexation of various first-row transition metals with the bis(1-methylbenzimidazolium) diiodide and dihexafluorophosphate salts, but couldn’t accomplish. Another attempt was given for generating the free carbene out of these salts, but the ligand got decomposed. All these compounds are characterized by ¹H NMR for initial confirmation. The thesis begins by discussing the importance of N-heterocyclic carbene and its complexes where they are well-utilized in various organic transformations. Then it describes the pincer metal complex systems and pincer carbene systems. A quick glance into relevant historical background regarding this work is also done in the introductory section. The advantages of using a silver (I)-carbene complex as an intermediate to perform various transmetalation reactions rather than using a base for carbene generation is briefly described in this report. In the last part, our experimental results and future directions of the work are described.
